Beyond the Life We Inherit

Finding freedom, purpose, and your own path

Today I turned 51. Yup, time flies.

Honestly, I still canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m 51. I still feel around 38. But as I get older, I notice that I think more deeply about life. About what I want from it, and more importantly, how I want to live it.

Because we often believe that we are living the life we chose. But are we really? Or are we simply living the life we inherited?

A life inherited from our parents, our upbringing, religion, education, and culture. A life shaped by expectations that were established long before we were old enough to question them. The habits. The routines. The way we are taught to think. Our definition of success. Career. Status. Achievement. The constant pressure to become more, earn more, achieve more.

Everything seems so heavily focused on performance. For years, I questioned all of it while still following much of the path that had been laid out for me. But the older you get, and the more failures and disappointments you experience from following a path that was never truly yours, something starts to change.

You develop a desire to create your own path. To follow your own dreams. To find out what life looks like when you stop living according to someone elseโ€™s blueprint. For me, that realization became very real during my solo journey. Traveling alone gave me something I hadnโ€™t realized I needed: space. Space away from expectations. Away from routines. Away from the roles I had become so used to playing.

When you travel alone, there is no one else to decide where you go, what you do, or who you need to be. Every choice becomes yours. And somewhere along the way, you start listening to yourself again. That journey wasnโ€™t just about only discovering new places. It was about discovering a different version of myself.

A version that didnโ€™t need permission. A version that didnโ€™t need approval. A version that was willing to choose freedom over familiarity. And that is one thing Iโ€™ve learned: when you choose to follow your dreams, you trade comfort for freedom. You lose the safety net, but you gain self-confidence. And perhaps most importantly, you lose the need for approval. In return, you find yourself on a path that is more aligned with who you truly are.

Our most valuable asset is time.

My solo journey made me realize that I donโ€™t want that feeling of freedom to remain something I experience only when I travel. I want to bring it home. I want to build my everyday life around it.Regardless of the fact that I still feel 38, the reality is that Iโ€™m 51. And that makes one thing increasingly clear to me:

Our most valuable asset is time. And once you truly understand that, I believe it becomes crucial to stop living life by default and start building it by design. Not the life I inherited. The life I choose.

My dreams, My path, My way & My rules.

That is the journey Iโ€™m on now. Not just traveling solo, but learning to live life on my own terms.

So, happy birthday to me!

And perhaps the bigger question is:
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself whose life you are actually living?
